Simunovich Olive Estate
The Home of Olive
Bombay is just 40 minutes south of Auckland City, but it’s half a world away from the beautiful Adriatic island of Brac’, Croatia where more than two centuries ago the Simunovich family first began cultivating olives for the health and well-being of the community, a tradition that now proudly continues on New Zealand’s largest privately-owned Olive Estate, where our trees have matured in just six short years—five times faster than our European counterparts. Kiwi magic? Great location? We like to think it’s a bit of both.
Built from the ground up in 1999, the estate was started with sustainability in mind. The estate is not only carbon neutral but carbon positive—annually producing 500 times more oxygen than it absorbs from the atmosphere for its own operations. Olive waste is used to fertilise estate produce and water is recycled and used to irrigate the property. In 2002 we produced our first pressed extra virgin olive oil. Since then, our family have nurtured and perfected our extra virgin olive oil into the award-winning olive oil it is today. The estate has become a fixture of the Franklin community sourcing the majority of our staff locally, providing training and development for over 50 people.
